Dental Nurse Apprenticeship reforms – all you need to know!

  • From 1st October 2017, new ‘Trailblazer’ Apprenticeships will replace the old SASE frameworks. All apprenticeships nationally will be delivered in accordance to the new standards. Apprentices that have been enrolled onto programmes before 1st October 2017 will continue on the current SASE Framework.
  • Why are apprenticeships being reformed?
  • In 2012, an industry wide review of apprenticeships was commissioned. The report indicated that a large number of employers felt the current framework was not fit for purpose. These findings led the government to develop a new strategy for apprenticeships, which better satisfied the industries changing needs.
  • Working in conjunction with employers, the new apprenticeship standards were specifically developed to ensure that course content and assessment accurately reflect the needs of today’s employers, and that upon completion, apprentices have the relevant skills and knowledge required to competently fulfil their job roles.
  • What exactly is changing?
  • The new apprenticeship standards state that the qualification must meet the following requirements:-
  • • A minimum 12 months learning period.
  • • All apprenticeships must be linked to a specific job role i.e. Apprentice
  • Dental Nurse.
  • • Delivery of the apprenticeship must be of the highest standard and
  • effectively prepare the learner for the new 'end point assessments'.
  • • No mandatory need for qualifications (unless specific licences to
  • practice are required).
  • How will they be delivered?
  • The new apprenticeship standards will be made up of the following components:-
  • • On and off the job training, enabling apprentices to develop the skills,
  • knowledge and behaviour needed to effectively fulfil their potential.
  • • Include Maths and English skills development.
  • • Adhere to plain English standards.
  • • Apprenticeship will include ‘end point assessments’.
  • End point assessments
  • The main assessment method in the new apprenticeship standards is in the form of an ‘end point assessment; this replaces the current SASE framework of continuous assessment.
  • The end point assessment will be conducted by an independent assessment organisation and a grading scale will be introduced to indicate the level of knowledge, skills and behaviour of the apprentice.
  • When will the new standards be introduced?
  • As of the 1st October 2017, all apprenticeships will be delivered in accordance to the new standards.
  • What are the costs?
  • If you are a non-Levy paying employer, your new contribution will be £900 (equates to 10% contribution of £9000) per apprentice. The course will run for a period of 18 months and the cost is in line with the national average.
  • The increased cost reflects the new high level industry specific training and assessment all apprentices will now receive, which in turn will provide highly skilled and competent staff for your workforce. If you are a Levy-paying company, you can claim the full cost of this training back through your Levy entitlement.
  • Here at Alder, we realise the value that apprentices bring to your practice and we want training to be accessible to all surgeries by making it as affordable as possible. With this in mind, we are introducing repayment plans to help you spread the cost for the duration of the programme. This reduces the costings to a repayment of £50 per month over 18 months.
  • Training young apprentices
  • If you are a small employer (fewer than 50 employees) there will be no cost towards training an apprentice who is 18 or under. The training remains fully funded by the government.
  • An incentive bonus of £1000 is available via a new government initiative to any employer taking on a 16-18 year old apprentice. The payments will be made in increments during the training programme.
